St. John Fisher College has named #Michael Wopperer# of the men’s basketball team as the College’s Male Athlete of the Week for the week ending January 4, 2009.
In a 4-0 week that saw the Cardinals push their win-streak to seven games, the junior center averaged 9.8 points and 8.5 rebounds per game. He led Fisher in scoring in the win over Stevens, and finished as the team’s top rebounder in all but one contest over the four-game span.For the week, Wopperer shot 50.0% (15-of-30) from the floor and a steady 9-for-12 from the free throw line.
Wopperer opened the week with a six-point, six-rebound performance against nationally-ranked Saint Mary’s College of Maryland, helping the Cardinals to a 97-80 upset win over the Seahawks.
Over the next three games, the 6-foot-7 junior recorded double digit numbers in the scoring column (10 vs. Muskingum, 12 vs. Hartwick), and notched his first career double-double with 11 points and a career-high 11 rebounds in the 60-52 win over Stevens Institute of Technology to close out the week.
For the season, Wopperer is the team’s top rebounder with 6.4 boards per game, while averaging 7.8 points per game. He also leads the team with 10 blocked shots in his first year as a full-time starter.
Fisher (7-1 overall, 2-0 Empire 8) will take on host Rochester Institute of Technology at 8 p.m. on Tuesday in an Empire 8 Conference matchup.
