St. John Fisher College has selected #Matt Newman# of the men’s basketball team as the College’s Male Athlete of the Week for the week ending November 30, 2008.
Newman, who led the Cardinals to an 86-76 road victory over SUNY Brockport last Tuesday, scored 14 points, grabbed a team-high nine rebounds, and made five steals in the team’s only game of the week.
The Cardinals, who enjoyed a 12-point lead at the half (44-32), built their lead up to as many as 17 points early in the final period. The Golden Eagles refused to go away though, and battled back over the next five minutes with an impressive 22-6 run. The spurt brought Brockport to within one (57-56) with 12:05 to play in the game.
Fisher scored nine of the game’s next 11 points, including a jumper and a pair of free throws from Newman, to get back in control (66-58), and sealed the win from the charity stripe down the stretch.
For the season, Newman ranks second on the team with an average 11.3 points per game, but is tops on the squad with 4.7 boards per game. The junior guard also leads the team with 10 assists so far this year.
Fisher (2-1) will take on Hobart College at 7 p.m. tomorrow night. Following the Hobart game, the Cardinals will take a three-week hiatus before hosting St. Mary’s College of Maryland and Muskingum College late in December.
