St. John Fisher College has named #Jimmy Smith# of the football team as the College’s Male Athlete of the Week for the week ending October 5, 2008.

The senior wide receiver finished with a career-high nine receptions for 78 yards and one touchdown in a 31-28 upset loss to visiting Hartwick College on Homecoming weekend. With the touchdown, Smith became just the 13th player in school history to eclipse 100 points for his career, and now has 102 points on 17 career touchdowns.

Smith’s touchdown, a 13-yarder at the 5:41 mark in the fourth quarter, tied the game at 28, capping a six play, 58-yard drive that spanned 2:31. The Hawks answered back with 10 play 56-yard drive and a field goal to take a 31-28 lead that held up for the win. On its ensuing possession, Fisher drove to the Hartwick 10-yard line, but fumbled the ball away with less than 30 seconds remaining in the game.

For the season, Smith leads the team with 31 receptions for 485 yards, and ranks second on the team with two touchdowns. He ranks third among all Empire 8 Conference receivers with an average of 97.0 receiving yards per game, and fourth with 6.2 receptions per contest.

The Cardinals (3-2 overall, 1-1 Empire 8), who saw their 11-game home win streak snapped with the loss, will look to get back on track at 1 p.m. on Saturday. Fisher will host No. 17 Salisbury University in its third consecutive meeting with a team that qualified for the NCAA Championship last season.
