St. John Fisher College has named junior defensive tackle #Tyler Wood# of the football team as the College’s Male Athlete of the Week for the week ending September 7, 2008.

Wood recorded four tackles (three solo), including two sacks for a loss of nine yards before suffering a season-ending knee injury in Fisher’s season-opening 33-3 loss to No. 1 Mount Union College in Alliance, Ohio on Saturday.

The Purple Raiders jumped out to a 13-0 lead on a pair of touchdown runs from senior Nate Kmic, before returning an interception 21 yards to take a 20-0 lead at the half.

On the ensuing drive in the third quarter, Wood broke through the line on a second down pass attempt to record his first sack of the season. Just two plays later, the Cardinals forced a fumble to halt the Raider’s drive.

Mount Union tacked on another touchdown to set the score at 33-0 in the third quarter, whenWoodsacked Raider QB Greg Micheli for an eight-yard loss. After a Mount Union punt three plays later, the Cardinals capped a nine-play, 72-yard drive with a field goal for their only points of the game.
Fisher (0-1) will return to action on Saturday to take on Buffalo State College (0-0) in the Cardinals’ home-opener.
