FAIRPORT, N.Y. – Freshman forward Sam Ciappa tallied three points with two goals and an assist as the St. John Fisher men's ice hockey team crossed off another inaugural-season milestone on Friday night – its first game and victory at the Rochester Ice Center.
The Cardinals jumped out to a 3-0 lead, with Ciappa scoring the first two goals, and never looked back en route to a 6-2 victory over visiting SUNY Morrisville in front of a packed crowd of students, alumni and plenty of other Fisher supporters who'd been eagerly awaiting this night for months. The Cardinals improved to 2-1 overall on the young season with the victory, while Morrisville dropped to 1-2.
How It Happened
Ciappa put the Cardinals ahead with an unassisted tally six minutes into the opening period and added his second goal just over five minutes into the second on an assist from freshman forward Mitchell Ferras.
Ciappa and senior forward Elijah Devereaux set up freshman defender Carter Cwiklinski for a shorthanded goal that put the Cardinals ahead 3-0 at the 7:32 mark in the second period.
The Mustangs got on the board on Logan Robins' goal less than a minute later, but the Cardinals went back ahead by three before the period ended on junior forward Brendan Merriman's power-play goal at 15:20. Freshman forward Ian Emery and freshman defenseman Lucas Di Chiara had the assists on that tally.
Emery, freshman forward Gavin Brandon, and freshman defender Wyatt Swonger extended the Cardinals' lead to 6-1 with third-period goals.
Morrisville added one for the road before time ran out, making it 6-2 on Maxim Maziarchuk's goal with less than five minutes to go.
St. John Fisher senior goalkeeper Sebastian Woods played all 60 minutes between the pipes and made 22 saves, including 10 in the second period.
