TUCSON, ARIZ. – The Collegiate Baseball Newspaper released its newest issue and it includes the NCAA DIII Top Players to Watch for the 2023 season as chosen by coaches across the USA. The St. John Fisher University baseball team had four players selected: LHP
Connor McHugh, RHP
Ryan O'Mara, INF
Noah Campanelli and OF
Ben Lavery.
McHugh is coming off a stellar 2022 season where he appeared in 15 games, starting in 11 of them and going 7-2. In 55.2 innings pitched he held a 2.10 ERA, struck out 43 batters and held the opposition to a .172 batting average against him. The pitcher was voted First-Team All-Region by D3Baseball and Second-Team All-Region by ABCA. In addition, he was named Empire-8 Pitcher of the Year and First-Team Al-Conference.
O'Mara impressed in his first season with the Cardinals, pitching 48.0 innings across 14 appearances. In that time, he collected a record of 8-0 with a 3.75 ERA and struck out 47 batters, while walking just ten. The pitcher was selected as Third-Team All-Region by D3Baseball, named First-Team All-Conference and selected to the Empire 8 All-Tournament Team.
Campanelli is coming off a career year for Fisher, playing and starting in all 47 games. He recorded 75 hits in 185 at-bats for a batting average of .405. He totaled 15 doubles, three triples and four home runs. He scored 63 runs, while collecting 43 RBI. In the field he was just as impressive, finishing the year with 102 putouts, 104 assists and a fielding percentage of .967, a career best. The infielder was named Second-Team All-American by D3Baseball, First-Team All-Region by D3Baseball and ABCA, First-Team All-Conference, Empire 8 Player of the Year and Academic All-District by CoSIDA.
Lavery had a strong year in the outfield, playing and starting in 46 games. In 175 at-bats, he hit .314 with 55 hits including 11 doubles and 13 home runs. He recorded 52 runs scored and 53 RBI and had a slugging percentage of .600 and on base percentage of .405. Lavery earned Second-Team All-Region by the ABCA and earned First-Team All-Conference honors.
